Max: From Cybersecurity Consultant to Critical Software Engineer
Since when have you been working at KPN and how did you join the team?
"I've been working here since January 2022. After completing my master's in cybersecurity, I started as a security consultant through the Young Talent program. You get a different role every year, and that's how I transitioned to software development at Simyo. I liked this because engineers collaborate more and have more autonomy than consultants. In April 2023, I decided to remain a software engineer, but this time with the DE Streams team."
Why did you choose KPN?
“I ended up here by accident. As a student, I was looking for a thesis placement, and I came across the KPN traineeship. However, you couldn't combine it with studies. We agreed that I would start the traineeship after completing my thesis elsewhere.”
"I believe it's important for the team to meet regularly."
What does your workweek look like?
"We work three days from home, one day at the office in Rotterdam, and one day here in Sloterdijk. Most of us live in Rotterdam or Amsterdam. I myself live in Nijmegen, so commuting is necessary. I believe it's important for the team to meet regularly."
What are you proud of?
"The adjustment of our collective labor agreement, following the recommendations of my Young Talent team to the central works council and board members. It shows that the company listens to its employees and allows room for individual initiative. I'm also proud that our team has become crucial for all of KPN. If our system doesn't work, the organization comes to a standstill."
How do you continue to develop in your field?
"I try to keep my security knowledge up to date, read research papers and articles, and do a lot of self-study to improve my development skills. KPN offers all employees a personal development trajectory to make them more versatile."
What’s next?
"I'll continue to focus on software development for now. Maybe I'll explore how to apply my knowledge of streaming data to security systems. This is a large company, so if I ever want to switch teams or departments, there are plenty of opportunities."
